back to basics

Having come from a background of doing hair for 18 years to now being in the marketing department of a welding and machining company, I have realized that I have so much to learn.  My first couple of weeks here were very laughter filled as I would wander around the shop asking questions.

“What is the big machine that sprays white stuff and draws lines on the big circle things?”
– The Bridge Mill?

“What is the white stuff the Bridge Mill sprays?”
– Coolant?

“Does anyone have an L-shaped ruler I could use for a couple days?”
– A square?

These questions were always met with questioning looks of is she really serious right now? Yes, I know…  I should have probably done a little research prior to asking these questions, but, what better way to learn than by on-the-job training, right?  And in my defense, if I would have sent any of them into a hair salon and told them to cut a Pompadour or handed them a Boomerang Perm Rod and told them to figure out what to do with it, they would have been in the same boat as I was/am.

Well, all of these questions have led me to believe I can’t be alone in my lack of knowledge of the basics in this industry.  With this in mind, I am going to start a series of articles that will take us all Back to the Basics.  I am looking forward to learning more and coming up with different topics to write about.  Check back at least every week or 2 to see what new information I have learned!  And if you have a great idea for a topic for me, let me know!  I will give a shout out to you in my article and do my best to get us all the answers we are looking for.
